Book Excerpt
If you were my baby squirrel,
I would welcome you to the world
In a secret nest I made just for you.
If you were my baby otter,
I would give you the sea for a playground
And rock you in the waves...
Book Review
"... The warm yet lighthearted text is well matched by pen & ink and watercolors pictures that maintain a mostly naturalistic air, but give friendly, curious and loving expressions to the animals; touches of cool blues and lavenders add brightness to the browns and greens of furs and forests." ~Notes From the Windowsill (February 26, 2007)
About the Author / Illustrator
If You Were My Baby was inspired by at least three generations of women. Fran Hodgkins' mother taught her to love nature, and how to watch and "really see." An early memory of Fran is watching for hours as a spider built a web on her tire swing. Now as a mother, Fran passed her love of wild things on to her daughter Rosie "without even really thinking about it." From their backyard in Lynn, Massachusetts, to the beach, to the forest, they watch - and Rosie inspired this book through her questions about nature and animals. If You Were My Baby is Fran's first book with Dawn Publications.
From her studio window or nearby her home nestled in the Shenandoah Mountains of West Virginia, Laura Bryant saw deer, fox, ducks, bats, possum, squirrels, skunks, and even a bear - all while she was illustrating this book! Laura is an award-winning children's book illustrator who loves to celebrate visually the beauty and intimacy of nature. Her hope is that children see their connection to the natural world as well as the love and warmth of their own parent. If You Were My Baby is Laura's first book with Dawn Publications.
